Abstract
Many commercial banks and lending organizations have recognized that the small business market is their primary growth market for lending and other bank services such as deposits, electronic banking, and treasury management services. Newly hired business development officers (BDOs) and small business lenders, and those rising through the ranks to small business BDO, lending, and treasury management positions, are often hired for their sales expertise rather than for their knowledge of accounting or business.
However, the conversations that occur with customers and the judgment calls that must be made on the job require them to review company financial statements and understand the client’s business. They must recognize both the opportunities for the bank and the risks, discuss the client's business and needs intelligently, and know what questions to ask in order to gather all the information needed for a sound judgment.
